Matthias Grote

is a berlin based guitarist, composer, producer, arranger and educator (www.musikschule-pankow.de) working in a wide variety of styles: jazz, improvisation, film score, classical, electronica, south american and most kinds of pop music,

was born in 1982 in Neuss, Germany,

picked up the guitar at age 6,

felt good about that,

studied jazz guitar, classical guitar and composition at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden, Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the KWU Vienna,

holds a diploma and a masters degree in jazz guitar as well as a bachelors degree in jazz composition/arrangement,

principal teachers included andy middleton, jesse van ruller, claus spechtl, werner kiefaber, heinz wallisch, martijn van iterson, stephan bormann, thomas fellow, roman schwaller and lydia kennedy,

attended workshops and private lessons with reggie workman, vic juris, dave liebman, tomasz stanko, johannes enders, sylvain luc, wolfgang muthspiel, yamandu costa, wayne krantz, john abercrombie and phillip van endert,

has performed concerts all across europe with his own projects and as sideman with musicians of diverse backgrounds, like matisyahu, ian simmonds, adel tawil, wolfgang schiftner, schleck&stecker, julius heise, lukas kranzelbinder, harry pierron, willi resetarits and andy middleton,

has written and arranged music for big band and other large jazz ensembles, as well as written, produced and solo performed a new score for the movie ‚la cabina‘ (E 1973) by antonio mercero,

was finalist at the jazzprix straubing with his band ‚there be tyger‘,

was finalist in the FM4 Remix Contest for his reworking of ‚fallschirm‘ by berlin pop group mia.,

was elected representative for the KWU vienna at the 20th IASJ Meeting in the hague in 2010.

he also enjoys playing the drums and the bass, producing retro flavored hip hop beats, singing old swing tunes and cooking oddly coloured food. also, never shuts up about horror movies of the 80s.
